FAQ

Valerian tincture (Valeriana officinalis) is a natural herbal preparation made from valerian root using the traditional cold maceration method. This process helps preserve a broad spectrum of naturally occurring compounds characteristic of the plant.

The alcohol content is carefully adjusted to the properties of valerian root, allowing for the extraction of both water-soluble and alcohol-soluble plant compounds, including its characteristic aromatic substances. The result is a balanced extract that preserves the plant’s natural complexity.

We grow valerian on our organic herbal farm in Slovenia. The roots are carefully dug up by hand and processed with great attention to every stage – from the soil to the finished product.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)

Valerian is a perennial plant with delicate white to pale pink flowers, growing in moist meadows, along woodland edges and in open, sunny habitats. Although its above-ground parts are graceful and delicate, its greatest value lies in its roots, which have a long history of traditional herbal use.

It belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family, although older botanical literature often places it in the Valerianaceae family. The root (Valeriana officinalis radix) is most commonly used to prepare the tincture, as it contains the plant’s most characteristic compounds.

Valerian is also fascinating because of its name. The Latin term “officinalis”, found in the botanical names of many plants, indicates a long history of traditional medicinal use. The English name “valerian” has a soft, almost sleepy sound, beautifully reflecting the calming qualities associated with this plant throughout the centuries. Valerian is also known for the distinctive, powerful aroma of its roots – a scent that some recognise immediately and others never forget.

Traditionally, valerian has been used during periods when we seek greater inner peace, evening calm and a sense of relaxation. It is often included in herbal routines during times of tension or restlessness, as well as in evening rituals designed to help the body and mind gently transition into a slower rhythm.

Valerian has also traditionally been associated with supporting natural sleep quality, mental and physical well-being, and relaxation during stressful periods. It is often used when we wish to encourage a calmer daily rhythm and bring a greater sense of peace and gentleness to our evenings.

Can I take Valerian tincture only in the evening?

Yes, you can take Valerian tincture only in the evening. It is often included in an evening routine, approximately 30–60 minutes before bedtime, to help the body transition into a calmer, more restful state. If needed, it can also be taken in smaller doses during the day.

How long does it take to notice the effects?

Valerian is traditionally used as a herbal remedy whose effects develop gradually. Some people may experience a sense of calm shortly after taking it, while its full benefits often develop with regular use over 2–4 weeks. Consistency and paying attention to your body’s natural rhythm are important.

Is it normal for Valerian to affect people differently?

Yes, individual responses to valerian can vary. It is traditionally used as gentle herbal support, so some people notice its effects sooner, while others experience them gradually with regular use.

Why are cats so attracted to Valerian?

Valerian root contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds that are particularly attractive to cats. These substances can have a stimulating or playful effect on them, often causing cats to roll around, rub against the plant or show great interest in it.

In humans, however, valerian is traditionally associated with relaxation and calm – a fascinating example of how the same plant can affect different organisms in very different ways.
