FAQ

Motherwort Tincture (Leonurus cardiaca) is a natural food supplement made from flowering motherwort herb using the traditional cold maceration method. This process helps preserve a broad spectrum of naturally occurring plant compounds.

The carefully adjusted alcohol content allows for the effective extraction of flavonoids, iridoids and other naturally occurring compounds found in the flowering herb, producing a well-balanced, full-spectrum herbal extract.

Our motherwort is organically grown on our herbal farm in Slovenia, where we carefully observe the plants throughout their entire growth cycle. The herbs are hand-harvested and carefully processed in Slovenia.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)

Motherwort is a perennial herb with delicate pink flowers that thrives along sunny garden edges, beside paths and close to human settlements. Even its name reflects its long association with the heart and inner balance. The Latin word cardiaca means “of the heart”, while Leonurus translates as “lion’s tail”, referring to the plant’s distinctive appearance.

It belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae), which includes many other aromatic and medicinal plants.

In herbalism, we use the flowering herb (herba cum flore), harvested during the peak flowering season, when the plant is rich in its characteristic natural compounds.

Interestingly, its English name, motherwort, reflects its traditional association with women’s health and well-being. The plant has a slightly bitter taste, characteristic of many herbs traditionally associated with inner balance.

Motherwort has traditionally been used during periods of inner tension, restlessness and emotional stress, as well as to support women throughout the menstrual cycle. It is also often incorporated into herbal routines focused on general well-being and a sense of calm.

In traditional herbalism, motherwort is associated with supporting normal heart function, the nervous system and a sense of calm and inner stability.

In traditional herbal practice, motherwort is associated with women’s well-being and has historically been used during periods of irregular menstruation, promoting a sense of harmony and inner balance.

Are There Different Species of Motherwort?

Yes, the Leonurus genus includes several species. However, common motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is the most widely used species in European herbalism and has a particularly long history of traditional use.

Can Siberian Motherwort Be Used?

Siberian motherwort (Leonurus sibiricus) is a related species, but it is less commonly used in European herbalism. Unlike common motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), it is not covered to the same extent by European herbal monographs.
