Hops (Humulus lupulus)
Hops is a climbing plant with long, flexible shoots that naturally reach towards the light. It is best known for its characteristic green cones, which have a distinctive aromatic scent and a slightly bitter taste. Hops holds a special place in Slovenia, where it has long been part of our agricultural and herbal tradition.
It belongs to the Cannabaceae family. Cannabis also belongs to this botanical family, although the two plants differ considerably in their traditional uses, character and composition.
In herbal preparations, we primarily use hop cones (Humulus lupulus, strobilus). These are the female flower clusters, harvested when they are well developed, aromatic and rich in their characteristic bitter and fragrant resinous compounds.
Hops has an interesting story. Today, it is most commonly associated with brewing, but in traditional herbal practice it was also valued as a plant of the evening, quietness and calm. Hop cones were once placed inside pillows and used as part of evening rituals, particularly when people wished to create a greater sense of calm before sleep.
Interestingly, hop harvesting was once an important social event. In hop-growing regions, people of different generations gathered together at the end of summer, with the work accompanied by conversations, songs and a strong sense of community. Hops is therefore not only a plant of bitterness, but also a plant woven into local stories and the atmosphere of late summer.
In herbal tradition, hops is valued as an aromatic bitter herb with a distinctly evening character. It is often included in herbal routines during periods when we wish to support a sense of calm, relaxation and inner balance.
Traditionally, hops is used in evening herbal preparations, during times of tension and restlessness, and whenever we wish to create a calmer daily rhythm. With its distinctive aroma, bitterness and warmth, hops has a character that is unmistakably its own.

Why do we use organically grown hops?
Hops are one of those plants where both the variety and the way they are cultivated can make an important difference. Over the centuries, hop growers have carefully selected plants with a distinctive aroma, a rich profile of aromatic compounds and consistent quality. This is why cultivated hops are highly valued today, both in brewing and in herbal traditions.
For our tincture, we use organically grown Slovenian hops. This allows the hop cones to be harvested at the optimal time, helping to preserve their characteristic aromatic qualities. Cultivated hops also provide more consistent plant material, which is important when preparing a well-balanced herbal extract.
Wild hops are a fascinating part of our natural heritage, but their characteristics can vary considerably from one plant to another. With cultivated hops, we can select trusted varieties and maintain consistent quality from year to year.
Slovenia has one of the longest hop-growing traditions in Europe, and we are happy to use Slovenian organically grown hops in the preparation of our tincture.
