FAQ

Greater Celandine Tincture is a herbal preparation for external use, made from the fresh herb and root of greater celandine (Chelidonium majus, herba et radix). It is prepared using the traditional cold maceration method, in which the plant is gently soaked in alcohol for several weeks to preserve a broad spectrum of naturally occurring plant compounds.

The alcohol content is carefully adjusted to ensure effective extraction of both alcohol-soluble and water-soluble compounds. This results in a balanced extract that captures the complexity of the plant and its characteristic constituents.

We harvest greater celandine on our herbal farm, carefully observing the plant from its growth to the ideal moment for harvesting. Each part is hand-picked at the right time, and our tincture is prepared in small batches with respect for the plant and its natural rhythms.

Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus)

Greater celandine is a wild-growing plant known for its distinctive yellow sap, which flows from the stem or leaves when the plant is broken. It grows along paths, beside walls, in gardens and in other slightly shaded, nutrient-rich places, often close to human settlements.

It belongs to the poppy family (Papaveraceae), which includes several plants known for their distinctive sap and potent natural compounds. Greater celandine is one of the most recognisable members of this family in our region.

Traditionally, both the herb and root (Chelidonium majus, herba et radix) are used in herbal preparations. The plant is particularly valued for its intense yellow-orange sap, which has long attracted the attention of herbalists and those who use plants in everyday skin care.

Interestingly, greater celandine often grows close to homes, along garden edges and beside paths, making it a plant that has traditionally been readily available. In folk herbalism, it is known as a particularly potent plant that requires respectful, careful and targeted use.

Greater celandine has traditionally been associated primarily with external application to specific areas of the skin. In traditional herbal practice, it was used when precise, localised and consistent care of small areas of skin was desired.

Greater celandine has a long history of use in European herbalism. Today, we value it as part of our herbal heritage and as a reminder that some plants should be used thoughtfully, locally and in moderation.

Greater Celandine Tincture + Calendula Balm

  • tincture applied externally, salve applied externally
  • greater celandine is applied precisely to the targeted area, while calendula salve gently nourishes the surrounding skin, leaving it soft and protected. Together, they combine targeted care with gentle, soothing skin protection.
Can Greater Celandine Be Taken Internally?

Greater celandine contains a group of active compounds known as isoquinoline alkaloids (e.g. chelidonine, sanguinarine and berberine), which contribute to the plant’s potent effects. These compounds also require caution when using the plant.

In the past, oral use of greater celandine preparations has been associated with adverse liver reactions, particularly with prolonged or inappropriate use. For this reason, a more cautious and considered approach is now recommended.

In modern herbal practice, greater celandine is therefore primarily used externally and locally, allowing for targeted application while reducing the risks associated with internal use.

How Long Does It Take to Notice Changes in the Skin?

The time varies considerably depending on your skin and the specific area being treated. With regular and consistent use, changes may gradually become noticeable within a few weeks, although the process can sometimes take longer.
