FAQ

Hypericum oil is a traditional herbal macerate made from fresh St John’s wort flowers (Hypericum perforatum). After harvesting, the flowers are immersed in organic extra virgin olive oil and macerated for several weeks using the traditional cold infusion method, allowing a broad spectrum of naturally occurring plant compounds to infuse into the oil.

Slow maceration without heating helps preserve the delicate constituents and the characteristic reddish colour for which Hypericum oil has been known for centuries.

We harvest St John’s wort by hand in Slovenia, partly on our herbal farm and partly in unspoilt areas of the Slovenian hills. The plants are gathered during flowering, on hot summer days when the flowers are richest in aromatic and other characteristic plant compounds. All plants used come from organic cultivation or are ethically wild-harvested.

St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)

St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the most recognisable summer herbs. It flowers around midsummer, when the sun is at its highest, and its golden-yellow flowers shine brightly among the grasses.

It belongs to the Hypericaceae family. To make Hypericum oil, we primarily use fresh flowers (flos), harvested when the plant is in full bloom.

One of the fascinating characteristics of St John’s wort is the distinctive red colour that appears when the flowers are rubbed between the fingers. During the slow maceration process, these pigments infuse into the oil, giving it its characteristic deep red colour.

In folk tradition, St John’s wort is closely associated with midsummer, light and protection. In the past, it was hung above doorways, placed beneath pillows or carried as a plant of the sun, believed to bring courage, clarity and protection.

In traditional herbal use, Hypericum oil is particularly valued for external skin care. It is used for massage, after-sun skin care and for caring for areas that need a little more gentleness, warmth and attention. With its rich red colour and sunny nature, it remains one of the most beloved herbal oils of summer.

Can Hypericum oil also be taken internally?

Our Hypericum oil is intended primarily for external use for skin care and massage. As it is made from organic ingredients, high-quality extra virgin olive oil and organically grown St John’s wort, some people also use it internally. Nevertheless, our recommendations are based primarily on its traditional external use, for which Hypericum oil is best known.

Is Hypericum oil phototoxic when used externally?

St John’s wort contains compounds that may increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight in some people. This is more likely with sensitive skin, larger amounts of oil applied to the skin or prolonged exposure to strong sunlight.

For this reason, we recommend avoiding intense sun exposure, sunbeds and prolonged exposure to strong summer sunlight on areas of skin where Hypericum oil has been applied.

If increased sensitivity occurs, it may appear as redness, a sensation of warmth, itching or skin irritation, similar to a mild sunburn. Such reactions are uncommon, but caution is sensible when using Hypericum oil on sunny days.
