FAQ
Hawthorn tincture is a natural herbal preparation made from the leaves, flowers and berries of hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna, folium et flos et fructus). It is prepared using the traditional method of cold maceration. This method helps preserve a broad range of naturally occurring compounds from the different parts of the plant.
We use a carefully selected alcohol strength suited to the combination of leaves, flowers and berries. This helps extract different groups of plant compounds while retaining the character of the whole plant.
We gather hawthorn by hand in the natural surroundings of our farm in Slovenia. We harvest with care for the plant, collecting each part at the right time, when it has reached maturity.

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)
Hawthorn is a thorny shrub or small tree. In spring, it is covered in white flowers; in autumn, small red berries take their place. In the landscape, it has a quiet but unmistakable presence, bringing together strength, gentleness and longevity.
It belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae).
In herbal practice, we mainly use its leaves, flowers and berries (folium et flos et fructus). Each part brings its own character, and together they form a well-rounded whole.
The Latin name *Crataegus* comes from the Greek word *kratos*, meaning “strength”, reflecting the hardness of its wood and the plant’s longevity. *Monogyna* means “with one ovary” and refers to a feature of the flower. In folklore, hawthorn is also associated with protection and the safeguarding of a place.
Hawthorn has a long history of use when people wish to care for their heart, circulation and sense of calm. It is often included in daily routines or in quieter seasons of life, when we seek a little more balance and softness.
In modern herbal practice, hawthorn is valued for its traditional association with the heart, blood vessels and relaxation. Its place in herbalism rests on a long tradition and an appreciation of its gentle yet distinctive nature.

Why can hawthorn interact with certain medicines?
Hawthorn contains naturally occurring compounds that may affect the heart and blood vessels. It may therefore alter the effects of certain medicines, particularly those used for heart conditions or blood pressure.
Extra care is needed if you take cardiac glycosides, such as digoxin, or blood pressure medication, as their effects may interact with those of hawthorn.
If you take any medication, we recommend speaking with your doctor or pharmacist before using hawthorn.
